Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand

The Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand is New Zealand’s largest national conservation organisation. Their site is a wonderful place to start if you would like to get more involved in conservation in NZ. It also has plenty of helpful information on where to go to see NZ birds, how to create a native habitat in your garden as well as reserves you can visit and lodges you can stay at. It also publishes a quarterly magazine called Forest and Bird, some articles of which can be viewed on their website.

The Kiwi Conservation Club

A subsidery of The Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand, The Kiwi Conservation Club is an awesome group for the kids. It sends out great magazines and has many local groups which organize field trips and other activities for its young members.

Pukaha Mount Bruce

One of Pukaha Mount Bruce’s key roles is the captive breeding of threatened wildlife and restoring the Pukaha Mount Bruce forest, including the re-introduction of species like the Kaka parrot. They have successfully worked to save some of the rarest bird species in the world. It also provides conservation education and is a tourist icon in the region. Visitors are able to experience some of the rarest species that cannot be viewed anywhere else on mainland New Zealand.

The Parrot Society of New Zealand

The Parrot Society of New Zealand is a great organisation for New Zealanders who breed or keep companion parrots or is interested in wild parrot breeding programs in New Zealand. It has a magazine, a monthly newsletter, classifieds and lots of member activities. Its website also contains a handy explanation of NZ import and export rules for parrots, as well as an extremely handy listing of avian vets in NZ.

Australian National Cockatiel Society

The Australian National Cockatiel Society is a club for those breeding or keeping companion cockatiels. It has an informative bi-monthly journal, and offers a great support system to members throughout Australia and overseas. It holds monthly meetings in Brisbane and Sydney which are open to anyone interested in going.
